Hot Movies for Cool Nights

Posted by: Kathy Kulig    in uncategorized

My dh came into my office the other night and said, “The leaves are falling already.” I told him, “No, put them back!” I’m not ready to give summer up yet. The 95 degree weather has given way to cool breezy 60 degrees. I do love fall and the fall colors. I think about baking apple pies, apple crisp, apple anything. As the nights become too cool to sit out on our porch, watching movies become the option.

I love movies. All kinds from old classics, action-adventure, SciFi, suspense, comedies, some scary (not overly gross scary), and sexy/romantic movies are some of favorites.

I started compiling a list of the ultra sexy flicks and would love to hear from you for suggestions. A few favorites that come to mind are DECEPTION with Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor and Michelle Williams. An “accidental” switch of cell phones draws McGregor into an ultra wealthy and secret sex club called “The List”. What seems like a happy accident for McGregor turns into murder and corporate embezzlement.

WILD ORCHID, an older flick, but one of my favs is a fun, sexy movie with Mickey Rouke (when he was still hot), Jacqueline Bisset, and Carre Otis. It’s a sultry, erotic story set in Rio de Janeiro. I like exotic settings.  It’s a tangle of raw sensuality and emotions.

BODY HEAT with William Hurt and Kathleen Turner. Again sex and murder makes for a classic, sultry and compelling combination.

BASIC INSTINCT- Very hot and suspenseful with twists and turns with Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas. Sharon Stone had a run of a few sexy flicks: SLIVER and BASIC INSTINCT 2. And Michael Douglas had FATAL ATRACTION.

So these are just a few to warm you up on the chilly nights. What are your favorite ultra sexy flicks??

Great Review for Damned and Desired

Posted by: Kathy Kulig    in Kathy Kulig

All reviews are subjective. We as authors know that not everyone is going to like our books. But it’s great, and a big relief, when a reviewer DOES like it. So I have to share this one from Romantic Times Magazine.

4 Stars: “Excellent storytelling, complete with a demoness and her minions, enlivens the pages with shapeshifting space travelers bent on destruction. There is plenty of sex to titillate the senses and enough intrigue to challenge the mind.” Reviewed by Donna M. Brown.

Here’s the blurb she gave: “Sakari is a Drone who must give many offerings of chi to the rulers of Anartia to keep their planet in existence. Her goal is to capture Sha Warriors from Earth to utilize their superior sexual energy. Unfortunately she kills her first assignment. Not wanting to return to her slave status, she begs for another chance.

Once again Brad is passed over for the search and rescue team. He escapes to the desert, where he encounters a beautiful young woman. Brad and Sakari begin an adventure that takes them out of this world. Unfortunately, Sakari is monitored by other Drones who report her status to the rulers. She’s falling fast for Brad, a Sha Warrior and shapeshifter, and doesn’t want him sacrificed.”

A World of Dragons

Posted by: Kathy Kulig    in Kathy Kulig

No, it’s not another Playstation or Xbox game. I found some interesting things about dragons while researching for my new book with Ellora’s Cave, Dragon Witch. Dragons appear in many popular movies: Dragonheart, Eragon, Dragon Slayer, Nerverending Story and others.

Dragon mythology can be found in most cultures throughout the world.  The two most common types are the European dragon and the Chinese dragon. But there are many others I came across and each have interesting characteristics. Most dragons are huge reptilian-like creatures, with either one or two sets of lizard-like legs, a long tail and able to emit fire from their mouths. Dragons with no front legs are called wyvern.

The European Dragon has bat-like wings protruding from its back. These dragons are hatched from eggs and are known to viciously guard treasures, hidden in a cave. European dragons are usually depicted as malevolent.

Chinese Dragons resemble a snake and can have many legs. They are said to possess great wisdom and magic. Chinese dragons can take on human form (Ancient shapeshifters-ha!) and were thought of as benevolent.

One of my characters, Kai, is a shapeshifting dragon with an interesting lifecycle. I did find a few shapeshifting dragons in my research but none with the peculiar traits that Kai has.

The Eight Types of Dragons:

1.      The Naga –  A wingless dragon from India. They prefer watery dwellings and sometimes guard treasure like the European dragons.

2.      The Bakunawa – From the Philippines. It’s a deity that looks like a serpentine dragon with 2 sets of wings and a large mouth. Bakunawa translates to “moon eater” or “man eater”.

3.      The Yilgean – From Siberia – A reptilian dragon depicted as a man-eater.

4.      The Korean dragon – Similar to the Chinese dragons. They were supposed to be peaceful and kind and like watery places—rivers, ponds, lakes and oceans.

5.      The Niòhöggr – From Scandinavia. A Norse legend and a nasty one. It lives below a giant ash tree, trapped in a seething caldron of corpses. An equivalent of Hell.

6.      The Zmaj – In the Republic of Slovenia – Three heads, green scaly skin and fire-spitting. All the usual traits associated with dragons.

7.      The Chuvash dragon – The European part of Russia. Winged, fire-breathing, but can shapeshift from dragon to human and back.

8.      The Cuélebre – A Spanish dragon from Auturias/Cantabria. It’s serpentine, winged and has colorful scales. They’re immortal and hoard treasure and fairy-like blonde nymphs.

How to Survive Rejections

Posted by: Kathy Kulig    in Kathy Kulig

Rejections sting no matter where you are in your publishing career. From the multi-published, NY Times bestseller to the yet to be published author, most everyone gets rejections at one time or another.

Writers should not take rejections personal, but they do. It’s unavoidable when they put so much of themselves into their books. Rejections are easier to survive if you think of them as stepping stones along your writing career, or opportunities to help you become a better writer.

HOW DO REJECTIONS MAKE YOU A BETTER WRITER?

  • They make you humble.
  • Make you strive to put out your best work all the time and not get lazy.
  • Teach you to slow down in your submission process. We all get excited when we come to THE END of a book. We want to begin sending out all those queries and partials. But rejections will quickly follow with this method. Let the manuscript sit for at least a few days, even better, a few weeks, then revise, revise, revise. Let it sit and revise again.
  • Help you to identify your strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Motivate you to develop your craft.
  • Help you to grow a thick skin so future rejections are easier.
  • Help you to understand that rejections are part of the business of writing and publishing.

FOUR TYPES OF REJECTIONS:

  1. Form letters – Forms letters could mean a few things. Most new writers get them while they’re still developing their craft. Don’t be discouraged. If you’ve finished a novel, you’re way ahead of the curve. Developing your craft takes time. And with each book you write, you will get better. You can also get a form letter if your writing is good but you targeted the wrong publisher, editor, line or agent. Another reason could be if that particular editor or agent simply doesn’t have the time to comment so they use form letters.
  2. Letter with comments – I celebrate every time I get these kinds of rejection letters, especially if the comments give specific advice as to what worked and didn’t work for them in the story. I’ve even had an editor or agent recommend a manuscript be sent to particular publisher or agent. These are gifts from the professionals. Study these comments carefully and with an open mind to see if they ring true. Whether or not they do, please send a Thank You to that editor or agent. They are extremely busy and for them to take the time to give any feedback means they saw some element of promise. You may be sending a future project to them.
  3. Letter with request to revise and resubmit. This editor or agent definitely sees potential with your project. They may want to see if you can revise and also if you’re receptive to revisions. Many writers mistakenly feel their work is perfect as it is. An editor or agent knows the market and knows what their house wants and what’s selling in today’s market. If you’re not an easy person to work with, there are plenty of talented writers out there who are. Some argue that if an editor requests revisions, they should make an offer. For an established author, that may be true. But for a newbie author, I can understand why they don’t offer a contract.  I was asked to revise and resubmit without a contract and the revised manuscript was rejected. Sure I was disappointed, but I found it to be an excellent learning experience and well worth my time. I believe my writing improved, and I developed a contact with a publisher.
  4. No response rejections – These are the toughest ones. Some agents are so swamped with queries and submissions that they’ve adopted the ‘no response rejection’. If you don’t hear from them within a certain amount of time, then they aren’t interested. Then there are the no response rejections from editors and agents who have requested your manuscript at conferences or through queries. Even after a follow up email or snail mail letter, I usually don’t get any response from these submissions. Are these rejections? Or are they submissions that have gotten lost? I’d like to think they were set aside as a possible maybe, then forgotten. These are very frustrating, but also part of the business. Usually after a year, I mark REJECTED on my Excel spreadsheet.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU GET A REJECTION:

  • Read it over carefully for helpful suggestions and comments. They could help you improve your work. Ask writing friends to get their take on the comments. Maybe they see something you don’t. Sometimes we’re too close to our writing and can’t see the same mistakes we continue to make.
  • Send a thank you. That editor or agent took the time to review your work. It might not be right for them, but they took the time to evaluate your partial.
  • File it away. You may need it for Tax purposes, but it’s also good to compare comments from other editors and agents. Are they giving you’re the same comments and suggestions? Are you making the same mistakes???
  • Revise the manuscript if necessary and resubmit to new agents or editors. But don’t get stuck revising and revising one manuscript. Begin a new project.
  • Keep writing. New projects will help you hone your skills.
  • Don’t let rejections get you down. Email/call/text a friend, then get back to writing. Persistence will turn those rejections into ACCEPTANCE.
  • Please share what you do when you get a rejection.

Coming Soon: Dragon Witch

Posted by: Kathy Kulig    in Kathy Kulig

Awaiting a new book release at Ellora’s Cave and especially anticipating that new gorgeous cover is like the anticipation we had as kids on Christmas. I’m especially excited about my newest book, Dragon Witch, http://www.jasminejade.com/ps-8624-50-dragon-witch.aspx   because it’s my first SciFi erotic romance.

Dragon Witch, Coming Soon

DRAGON WITCH will be released on September 15th at Ellora’s Cave!

I remember my interest in the paranormal and SciFi started in the third grade. As most writers, I loved books from an early age. Two books stick in my mind from my third grade class: The Dark Side of the Moon and Secret Cave. After that, my bookcase in my bedroom was filled with books like: Strangely Enough, 1001 Ghost Stories, Twilight Zone, etc. And later, books by Arthur C. Clarke, Robert A. Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, Anne McCaffrey, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Larry Niven, Isaac Asimov, many others.

Few books stay in my mind because I don’t have the greatest memory, but I do remember reading a number of Anne McCaffrey’s books and her Dragon Riders of Pern. Maybe that’s an old memory that finally sparked an idea for this story. I can still imagine Ms. McCaffrey’s world, see the dragons flying and the dangerous thread shooting down from the sky. It’s every writer’s dream to build a world and write a story that readers remember.

I always wanted to write a SciFi book, even started and stopped, several times and decided I had no idea what I was doing. I remember one story I tried writing was about a space ship from earth that landed on a planet to do some exploration but when the crew finished and took off in their ship, they had a hitchhiker–a ghost. The alien ghost haunted their ship, invaded their dreams and caused bizarre hallucinations while they were trapped in outer space. But I never got past a few chapters because I didn’t know how to develop a plot. Several years later the movie Event Horizon came out–a similar theme.

Here’s an excerpt of Dragon Witch:

Jaida Chel slipped off her raw silk sarong and flung it over the hook on her kitchen wall. Now naked and cooler, she rushed back to the bubbling pot of blue-green slurry on her stove and waved her applewood wand over the steaming brew, reciting a blessing as she stirred.

Oh, guardians of this distant land,

protectors where the sargassia dwell,

Infuse no ill or bane for Somerled.

I ask you charge my magic spell.

After lighting a candle and white sage incense on the counter next to the stove, she took a quick sip from her glass of lialade. The afternoon sun streamed in through her wide windows and open door raising the heat in her tiny adobe cottage.

Outside the warm breeze rustled the leaves of her citrus trees and abundant garden of grapes, vegetables and herbs. Closing her eyes, she inhaled the sweet-scented breeze and enjoyed the brief swirling coolness on her bare skin. Her nipples tightened and hardened to the gentle touch of air, like a lover’s breath. It had been much too long since she’d had made love—half a year on Somerled.

What if she took a lover from town? Nothing permanent, just a casual affair. After three years on this planet, the colonists had forgiven her for her devastating mistake at the last settlement. Most agreed this was a more hospitable planet even if it wasn’t their first choice. It was all her fault they had to relocate here. The colonists had made the adjustment. If only she could forgive herself.

She might find a willing partner now. Nothing permanent, just a casual affair. She doubted there would be a man from the colony willing to ostracize himself and be her life mate, but she might find a secret lover. A few ideas came to mind on how she might accomplish such a plan. The only concerns were to keep the other colonists from finding out and making Kai understand her needs. Kai could be very difficult and jealous at times.

She glanced at her shelves containing jars and bottles of elixirs, teas and ointments that she sold or bartered with the colonists. Her Dragon Tear Elixir, the most prized product on Somerled for its medicinal purposes, was nearly out. To make more she had to travel to the coast for the sargassia harvest, the elixir’s key ingredient. Mmmm. The twice a year harvest had its other benefits too—seeing Trent again. She smiled and felt her pussy clench.

Noticing the layer of green slime on the surface of the bubbling mixture, she quickly skimmed it off with a flat spoon. The aquasam had to be poured into the containers before it jelled or she’d have one hell of a mess.

The warning bells clanged, signaling a guest approaching her house. The bells were her magical guard dog. The garden gate squeaked as heavy footsteps trod up her stone walkway. She rolled her eyes to the ceiling and sighed. Mr. Moretti.  Forgawdsake.

She eyed her blue tunic hanging on the hook out of reach and then at the pot of aquasam that she dared not stop preparing. As the last of the thick skin was removed, she picked up the pot and began pouring it into the small jars.

Caught naked in her kitchen again. Was Mr. Moretti making a habit of arriving early on pick-up days, or was it her imagination? He distributed her wares in the village store since most colonists dared not visit her, and she avoided trips into the village unless absolutely necessary. “Mr. Moretti, you’re early. Could you wait outside? I’m almost finished.”

He didn’t answer, but out of the corner of her eye, she saw a figure standing in her doorway. The dazzling sun peered into the house behind him, only allowing her to see his silhouette. She felt his gaze travel over every inch of her.

She dribbled a little of the blue-green syrup down one of the jars and groaned. “Grant me power,” she mumbled, then called out to him. “You can leave my delivery at the door while I pack up your order.”

Still no answer.

Nudity wasn’t uncommon among the settlers—Somerled was a tropical planet most of the year—but it wasn’t exactly proper for a married man to be alone with a single woman, especially when she was naked.

Then she heard two thunks outside her door—her bags of rice and flour. “Great. Have yourself a seat under the lia lia trees, and I’ll get you something to drink in just a minute.” Already the solution was darkening and getting thick and hard to pour.

But the shadow remained, leaning casually in her doorway, arms crossed. She felt herself flush and a shiver crept up her body. Mr. Moretti was a stout man and at least fifteen years her senior, not her type. And it was not like him to be so bold and impolite.

Finishing her chore, she turned to face him, a bit annoyed with his rudeness. But the man leaning casually in her doorway was not Mr. Moretti. He was tall, broad in the chest, with well-defined muscular arms and dark hair cut short. With the sun so low in the sky Jaida could not see the man’s face. Nor could she guess who he might be.

She swallowed, took a step back as her mind raced trying to recall the other settlers in the village who could fit the dimensions of this man but couldn’t. A twinge of fear shot through her at the thought of space raids, but she hadn’t heard the sirens.  “Are…are you here to pick up Mr. Moretti’s order?” she stammered. Who was this man? She glanced at her sarong, suddenly feeling exposed but hesitated to grab it because she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of showing her discomfort.

“Did another freighter or shuttle arrive today?” she asked with her power voice, the confident tone used to evoke the goddess and nature spirits on this planet to do her spells.

The man chuckled. A familiar, sexy laugh. “Hello, Jaida.”

Her stomach twirled with excitement, her nipples tightened and her body ached with need, all from the sound of his voice.

Damn you, Captain Brayden Stokes. Her heart ached too, although she thought she’d put that part of their brief encounter all behind her. She breathed in the white sage, burning in a censer, in an attempt to block the erotic memories of Brayden that flooded her mind—his mouth, his hands pleasuring her. Closing her eyes, her thoughts drifted to many hot, passion-filled hours, making full use of every spare inch of his tiny, private bunk. An involuntary throb began between her thighs, remembering his hard cock plunging deep inside her. The sage did nothing to ease her desire. Already, she felt dampness and a swelling in her clit. She was clean shaven. If Brayden glanced down would he see the evidence that betrayed her desire? Crossing her arms over her waist in a casual pose, she then turned on an angle and crossed one ankle over the other in an attempt to hide her pussy. She glared at his silhouette. “Hello, Brayden. What brings you planetside?” she asked coolly.
